We are starting our Research project. Your ultimate goals when doing this project will be:
- write a 1-page paper about your topic using proper document formatting
- create a presentation or website about your topic.
Your topic can be anything of interest to you. Some suggestions include:
- a person (musician, YouTuber, athlete, actor)
- a place (maybe somewhere you have been or would like to go)
- an animal (could be your favorite animal, or a cause to support a particular animal)
- a historic event (World War II, the Great Depression)
Getting started:
1. Open a blank Google Doc to take notes, paste helpful links, and paste photos you find while researching
2. Feel free to change your mind if you are having trouble finding information
3. We will start typing the papers after we have done research and learned more about formatting.
Example: Polar Bear Awareness
One of the Iditarod 5th Graders, Sam Traxson, has created a website to raise Polar Bear Awareness - Check it out here!

October 18
Spreadsheet Basics - We will be reviewing what we know from last year about Excel and Google Sheets. The first activity is to complete the Google Form that is posted on Google Classroom. No worries if you do not remember - I really just want to know what you all remember and what we need to review a little more, so just try your best :)
After reviewing the parts of a spreadsheet, students will open a spreadsheet template from Google Classroom and use the formatting skills to manipulate the cells to create an image.

October 1 - October 17
6th grade students have been practicing their touch typing skills, and learning proper technique. If you catch yourself hunting and pecking the keys, please try to remember to use the skills you have learned and to use your home row anytime you're on the computer!
We will start our Digital Citizenship Unit on October 10th and Ms. Strickland, from The Morgan Nick Foundation, will be here to visit all classes on that day to discuss the possible consequences of behaving irresponsibly online.
We are are also analyzing several scenarios to decide if a right choice was made, and what could have been done differently. One resource we are using is Cyber Island for grade 6.
September 12 - September 30th
We are focusing on being better typers! We will use Typing Master and Typing.com to practice all of our keys and improve our technique. Your technique will be part of your grade this year! I have placed covers over your keyboards to help you concentrate on typing the proper way.
The things I am looking for when assigning your technique grade include:
1. Posture - Are you sitting up straight?
2. Body - Is your body centered with your computer and keyboard?
3. Feet - Are your feet flat on the floor (as close as you can get it)?
4. Home Row - Are your fingers aligned with the correct keys?
5. Elbows - Are that at your side?
6. Wrists - Are they slightly raised?
7. Eyes - Are your eyes on your screen or what
August 26-September 9
Review computer parts and how to take care of equipment. We will create a diagram on Google Draw of all the parts necessary to make a computer work. Search for pictures of each device on Google Images and copy/paste the image onto your Google Draw sheet. Use a text box to label what each device is and tell me if it is an input device, output device, storage device, or processing unit.
The assignment is posted on Google Classroom. We will play Kahoot! once we have finished the Google Draw pages.
